Appliances

An appliance is easier to service, repair, or replace when its exact identity is written down before the day it fails.

Know what to look at, what to remember, and when to stop

A short, repeatable look, and a record that outlasts the visit.

Look and listen

Photograph the model and serial label on each major appliance
Note the age, warranty status, and any recall check you have done
Keep the manual, receipt, and part numbers where the household can find them
Notice new noises, leaks, error codes, or performance changes and write down when they began

Keep with the home

Room and appliance type, manufacturer, model and serial number, purchase or installation date, finish or color, store or installer, consumable or replacement part numbers, and where the receipt, manual, and warranty live.

Safety line: If you smell gas, leave immediately and call 911 and your gas utility from a safe distance. Do not stay to troubleshoot or operate the appliance. Fire, smoke, or a carbon-monoxide alarm also means leaving for safety and calling emergency services. Other electrical or water hazards need qualified help.
