A short, repeatable look, and a record that outlasts the visit.

Look and listen

Check the filter often enough to learn how quickly your own home loads it
Keep supply and return openings clear
Notice new sounds, odors, short cycling, water near equipment, or rooms that drift from the rest
Record the indoor and outdoor equipment model numbers together

Keep with the home

Filter dimensions and type, equipment models, installation year if known, service company, service dates, parts replaced, and warranty location.

Safety line: If you smell gas, leave immediately and call 911 and your gas utility from a safe distance. Do not stay to troubleshoot or operate equipment. Refrigerant work, exposed wiring, repeated breaker trips, or water reaching electrical equipment needs qualified help.
